Ky. State Prisons are really day camps.

The prisons in Kentucky are nothing but a joke. They are run like summer camps. I am a previous Ky. Correctional Officer. The way these prisons are run I have had several inmates tell me "This is the best I've ever lived I get 3 meals a day cooked, sattlelite tv, I can sleep as much as I want, go to the gym and work out, get my education, check books out of a really nice library and I don't have to work for a thing. My family sends me money or I get penpals that will send me money so why would I want to be out there." I had one guy tell me he married a woman he had never met just so she would send him money and that he had 2 more girlfriends and a boyfriend that would send money so he could buy anything he wanted from the store.
Some men are really trying to improve themselves because they don't want to be away from their loved ones anymore but others are just a drag on society as a whole. The prisons are wanting to do a kinder, gentler prison but without the consiquences of any real punishment why should there be any fear of being locked up. As tax paying citizens I think the prisons should be made harder so we would not have so many return offenders. I talked to a lady whose son is in a state prison and she said he just went a step over the line because alot of the neighborhood boys say once cool weather hits it's time to get locked up till spring.I do not judge anyone by what they have done because you never no when you might get caught in a bad situation and find yourself in the same spot.
Alot of Correctional Officers do treat the offenders differently because they look up what they are convicted off and make it harder on the ones they feel are unfit. There are several inmates in the prison I worked at that although they told me what they were convicted of and wanted me to look it up I still looked at them with dignity and respect because atleast they were honest about themselves.
I am of the oppion that if they would be sentenced to serve in the armed forces or in actual work houses doing community services to better improve the social and economics of the state it would also decrease the crime rate and improve their life by getting them working and teaching them a trade that they could use to support themselves once released. And this sending them back to prison for minor probation violations is not finacially responsible instead make them do the community serves. There are some of the men that are so old they are really not a danger to anyone and the state still keeps them locked up some are even to the point of being bedfast and should be in a nursing home where they could obtain propper care without being kept away from their families during their last days.
One man I know was sentenced to almost 66 years for rape of a 26 year old woman while he was 18 and another man raped and murdered a 16 years old while he was 28 and only received a 20 year sentence.I am sorry but the state should have a better balance system in place. There are several of the inmates I worked with that I would have no problem in the world of taking into my home because even when caught they said yes they did and some of them had good reasons why and that speaks alot for them. One man was convicted of bank robbery and the reason he did it was because he couldn't get health insurance for his wife that had terminal cancer and the Dr. wouldn't treat her anymore without payment.
So not all inmates are bad and deserve harsh punishments but in the same reasoning Ky. prisons should be looking to other ways to improve the inmates life by not sending them to a comfy, cozy, lazy man's living and put them in positions where they actually work in communities or signed up for active duty for the duration of their sentence.Because instead of us paying for their pleasures they could be paying taxes and learning better disipline.

A criminal's a criminal! Its unfortunate that that man robbed a bank to pay for his wifes health insurance, but I have a good job which allows me to have health insurance and if I had children and a husband I have the option to add them to that plan. I work hard so I can have the things I have, I do not have to go rob a bank for money. I do not think prisions should pamper criminals. I pay for my own satelite tv, I pay for the nice meals I eat, and I pay for my gym membership. I do not want to pay for some rapist, bank robber, or murders' satelite tv or gym. And whoever becomes penpals with a prisioner and sends them money without meeting them is just plain stupid. If you have money to give to a prisioner then you have money to donate to charity. There are kids dieing of cancer, animal shelters putting to sleep innocent animals because of lack of money to take care of them, there are homeless women and children who are victims of domestic violence who need help and these "penpals" are giving money to criminals so they can buy unneeded crap in the prision store? What has our society come to?? Prioners should be wearing pink underwear, they should be working their butt's off cooking their own food, working the crops so we can get rid of all the illegal workers. We should even take the less offensive criminals and have them volunteer at these animal shelters. They should not be sleeping whenever they please. They need no more than 7 hours of sleep! And the only chanele they should be offered is disney and the weather channel.

I agree but, how it got to be that way now was past treatment. We changed because there was evidence of cruelty. However, it seems we have gone overboard in some ways.
