It is known as the oldest job in the world, although some people consider it an occupation, others believe it is a profanity. Prostitution does not discriminate race, color, gender, or age. Ethnicity or life experiences are not disregarded by prostitution. Prostitution exists all over and is not limited to specific areas. It can be found at nightclubs or during the day at an apartment, where someone is having sex for money. Prostitution should be legalized. First, it would increase the amount of taxes that the government gains in a year. Next, it would decrease the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections) STI’s. Finally, it would lower the rape rates in the worksite. First, it is stated that prostitution would increase the amount of taxes that the government gains in a given year. If prostitution is legalized, it becomes a job. Therefore, organizations that employ prostitutes would be required to give a report to the government. Like other normal jobs, it would have to pay taxes to government, which would increase the amount of taxes that the government receives. Not only would it help to add more money to the government, but more importantly, it would save it. When prostitution is illegal, the government wastes money arresting and processing thousands of people who are caught dealing with prostitution. One knows that something that is legal does not require any police intervention. The legalization of prostitution would help police concentrate on things that really need their attention such as preventing homicides and robbery. Legalizing prostitution would slowdown the spread of STI’s. Even though it may be argued that the legalization of prostitution could boost the spread of STI’s instead of slowing it down, this conclusion has no foundation. If regulated by the government, prostitutes would have to meet certain standards to practice their profession. In states like Nevada and Rhode Island, where prostitution is legal, prostitutes need to pass a monthly health test in order to continue working. By integrating this process into other states, more money would be added to the health system and the entire United States society would benefit from it. In addition, if condom were mandatory, then the safety level would increase dramatically. These precautions would help people to stay healthier because it would dramatically lower the risk of contracting an infection. Finally, the government itself could establish stronger penalties to those who break the new laws in order to ensure that everyone is following it. If the healthy regulations were applied, this would help innocent people to not suffer bad consequences because of someone else’s bad decisions. Even thought unfaithfulness is wrong, reality shows that a certain amount of married couples break up because of it. Unfortunately, few cases show that women and their children are more likely to be the victims in these situations. Cases in which a married man had sex with a stranger infected with an STI is the most sorry to feel for. Sometimes men do not know that they contracted the infection. They will go home, act normal, and have sex with their couple. Then, his wife gets infected and if she gets pregnant during that period, the kid could suffer severe consequences. Moreover, one more broken family would be added to the statistics because of lack of trust. Next, the legalization of prostitution would lower rape rates among prostitutes. The number of rapes per year in United States is astonishing. The FBI department (FBI website) reported 95,000 rapes in 2004. Also they say that this statistics increases eight percent each year. Moreover, the FBI believes that less than 17% of all of the rapes are reported to the police. For this reason, there is no precise proof that can show how many of these cases are related to prostitutes. However, FBI estimates that each prostitute is raped at least once a week. With prostitution being illegal, a prostitute does not have the liberty to report a rape because they fear that they will also be penalized for violating the law. Legalizing prostitution could ensure security to prostitutes and also provide them healthier places to work. Finally, what about the people who think that prostitution is wrong because it is not moral? Morals refer to what is judged as right or wrong depending on the education that one received. Legalizing prostitution does not have anything to do with morals. If prostitution is legalized, it does not means that one has to do it, it only means that one is allowed to do it. If someone believes that it is wrong to be a prostitute, then do not take part of this business. On the other hand, there might be people who believe that the only way to gain money and give food to their children is prostitution. Any educated person knows that this argument is not true because out there society has infinitely many job opportunities for everyone. If one chose this profession, is because he or she wanted to. The point is that this change would not affect people as individuals, it would benefit society on a bigger scale. For those who believe that prostitution is wrong because of religious convictions, nevertheless, God gave liberty to everyone to make their own decisions. Only a few states, like Nevada and Rhode Island, have analyzed the situation from the right point of view. Senators and chairmen are aware of all the benefits that the legalization of prostitution would bring to the society. However, they have not take any action because they think that people would not understand and remain ignorant. To avoid this problem, people should be educated on this topic. It might surprise you if I share with you that I believe that prostitution is wrong. However, this is not about what I think is right or wrong, this is about what is better for everyone. Prostitution will increase the amount of taxes that the government receives, decrease the spread of STI’s , and lower rape rates among prostitutes. Therefore, it should be legalized for the better good of society. |

I agree mostly with your point about morals, and that it is a personal choice.. but I would have elaborated a little bit more... not only can people decide between right and wrong, but I think people have the right to do what they wish with their bodies. Also, I'm wondering, what's the difference between prostitution and working in the porn industry? Why is one legal and not the other?
You should make it more clear in the opening paragraph, rape among prostitutes.
There are many valid points in this argument such as earning taxes from it, having police focus on more serious problems, and having the prostitutes go through monthly health checks. However, even if the prostitutes are healthy, there needs to be a way to make sure married men still are not using their services. Just because they will not contract an STD doesn't make this right. And what is considered rape to a prostitute? Wehn she is not paid for her work? Many good points, but I do agree, it is easier said than done.
so how old would you have to be to "work" as a prostitute? 18? would they get paid an hourly rate or per customer? their employer would have to give them benefits. ie health insurance. theres just too much standing in the way. its easier said than done.

Adding to the point of the article, prostitution was not regarded negatively until the forthcoming of Christianity. In ancient Greece, Corinth especially, prostitution was esteemed not only as a great pleasure and luxury to partake in, but also as a means of supporting family. There was a clear distinction between women that were caretakers, raising children and maintaining households, and those that were sources for gratifying sexual cravings. Not to say that men did not have sex with their wives, but it was thought that by having prostitution available for men, whom perhaps drank to much wine or in some other way stumbled upon the urge for sex, the family of the man would benefit since he would not be pressed with the monogamous frustrations of trying to have both a caretaker and sensuous wife when the combination of such was rather impractical.
