Stricter gun laws might make sense

Well, here it is---another mark for the gun ban argument. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/04/08/ny.shooting/index.html This story along with the many other outbreaks happing throughout the United States are adding statistics to gun accessibility being a negative thing. If our average Joes do have guns, they're not using them against these shooters. And the guy in this story had 10,000 shots logged at his gun range. I know that many people (especially teenagers) want to possess a gun, but what's really more likely to happen: a) you use your gun to fend off a bad guy, b) an accident occurs involving your gun (child or friend injured), or c) you decide you're sick of it all and blast people. Based on the news I've been reading, it seems the last two are more likely to happen for any gun owner. And as far as the general public is concerned, wouldn't stricter gun laws be the statistically wise choice to make? Some may say that citizens have the right to bear arms. This is true, but back when that was written there were muskets, not automatic weapons. Furthermore, it's not likely that all the guns in local gun shops could pose any threat to today's military, if, as another dated right explains, we were forced to bear arms against the government. ![]() |

Show Oldest FirstI was listening to the news this morning regarding the shooting in Pittsburgh. Just because his personal life wasn't being fulfilled, doesn't give him the right to do harm. Yes, he is disturbed! He tried once before and opt out.
Please share your view Marc. Whenever you are ready.
It is sad. All I can say at this very moment is: A moment of silence.
I just want to add that all the critiques on this article definitely affected my view on gun rights and possession. I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but I was just prompted to revisit this discussion after seeing another example of what many of you already stated below: shooters pick spots where victims are likely unarmed. Very true.
This story just hit the headlines:
A shooting at an LA Fitness gym outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killed five people and wounded as many as 15.
He looked out of place in a class [latin jazz dance] full of women," according to the witness, who told WTAE the man put down the bag, turned off the lights and opened fire. (CNN.com)
Anyhow, much thanks to everyone that contributed here. Gun ownership is important in more ways than I previously realized.

"Australian Gun Control Update
After a year of disarmament, why are they down and out in the land down under?
It has now been over 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed, a program costing the government more than $500 million dollars. And now the results are in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent;
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent!).
In the state of Victoria, homicides with firearms are up 300 percent.
Figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms (but increased drastically in the past 12 months).
There has been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly.
Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain how no improvement in "safety" has been served after such monumental effort and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns." Bet you won't see this data on the evening news or hear your governor or members of the state Assembly disseminating this information.
It's time to state it plainly:
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws only affect the law-abiding citizens."

Thank you AB.
Thanks Count. Sometimes I see ourselves as puppets and that whoever has control, loves it so much. Good vs Evil. The way I see it, evil cannot survive without the good but, good can. I agree that maybe there is nothing more we can do about "Gun Control" I understand guns saved many lives and is continuing to do so as I speak. I am speaking for the men and women who fight the wars and the only thing I can do is pray for their safety and protection because if it not for them I would not be here. Yes, we are all safe for now and I think the abusers in our cities or wherever they are think twice. There's always those last few seconds to change a mind. Have a great night everybody, julita
Isn't it ironic that the guns you want gone are the very ones keeping you safe now. Before there were guns, the strongest people took whatever the hell they wanted and raped whoever they wanted. Rocks, swords, and farming tools didn't make very good weapons because they did not allow a physically weak person (such as the elderly or disabled) to realistically defend themselves against someone who was physically strong. Before guns the world was incredibly more violent and people died at the drop of a hat. The only tool of self-defense people had was strength in numbers. Guns are called “the great equalizer” because they actually would allow someone physically weak or disabled to defend themselves. -- Count on May 13th, 2009 at 1:08 PM
It was starting to run a little long <3 -- Count on May 14th, 2009 at 10:16 AM
All I can say is; when a critique runs long, some points are not fully assimilated into the brain. Some points/parts of that long critique may be forgotten. This point/part is excellent! I just wanted to repeat it. I also need to read your article. :o)
Thanks AB and welcome back. Those are high numbers. GOD BLESS YOU ALL--julita on May 13th, 2009 at 8:15 AM
"That places total victims who lost their lives because of gun control at approximately 56,000,000 [56 million] in the last century."
Yes, this is what happens when people are not able to have protection. These CHILDREN, SISTERS, DAUGHTERS, SONS, WIVES, MOTHERS, BROTHERS, and FATHERS were murdered because they could not fight and were not allowed to protect themselves. Yes Julita "Those are high numbers.", and they should mean something besides just numbers, they are dead SONS and DAUGHTERS. Gun control means the abusers, like your ex-husband, will be in control of the streets. Evil men are strong while children, women, and the old are weak. And we do not have enough police to be on every block.
